UC GPA Calculator Guidelines

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA ADMISSION REFERENCE

This calculator is designed to help students estimate their University of California (UC) GPA based on official UC undergraduate admission policies. Please review these essential guidelines before entering your coursework.

Course Eligibility & Term Formatting

UC-Approved A-G Courses

•  California High Schools: Only include courses that appear on your school's official UC A-G Course List.

•  Grade Levels: Include only courses completed after 9th grade (Sophomore and Junior years).

•  Summer Courses: Summer classes taken immediately before 10th grade should be included if they are part of your high school academic record.

•  Plus/Minus Grades: The UC system does not use plus or minus signs in its GPA calculations. An A+, A, or A- all carry the exact same weight (4.0 points for a standard course).

Structuring Your Academic Calendar

Do not list summer school as a separate standalone term when selecting your school schedule. Instead, integrate those credits into the standard academic year formats:

•  Semester System: Fall Semester + Spring Semester

•  Quarter System: Two Fall Quarters + Two Spring Quarters

•  Trimester System: Fall, Winter, and Spring Trimesters

Honors, AP, IB, and College Courses

Extra grade points can be earned for advanced coursework, but the rules vary depending on your location and the institution offering the course:

•  California Students: High school honors courses must be explicitly approved for honors weighting on your school's official UC A-G list.

•  Out-of-State/International Students: High school "honors" courses do not receive extra weight. However, Advanced Placement (AP) courses and International Baccalaureate (IB) Higher Level (HL) courses do qualify for honors weighting.

•  College Courses: Courses completed at a California Community College (CCC) may be included if they meet UC A-G requirements and qualify for UC transfer credit.

Understanding UC Weighted GPA Rules

The UC system calculates GPA using specific formulas that cap the amount of honors weight a student can receive.

-UC Weighted GPA : Adds 1 extra grade point for every semester of a UC-approved honors, AP, IB, or transferable college course, with no upper limit.

-UC Weighted & Capped GPA : Adds honors points but strictly caps the total bonus points allowed in the calculation.

Important Note on Grades

Honors points are not awarded for any course where a grade of D or F was earned.

The weighted and capped GPA limits the total honors bonus to a maximum of 8 semesters (or the regional equivalent: 16 quarters / 12 trimesters). Furthermore:

•  A maximum of 4 semesters of honors points can be counted from courses completed during 10th grade. •

The remaining honors points must come from 11th-grade courses.

Does Taking More Courses Lower Your GPA?

Because the honors bonus is strictly limited to 8 semesters in the capped formula, adding more standard college-prep classes can mathematically dilute the average, making it look like your GPA decreased.

Do not let this discourage you from taking a rigorous schedule.

UC admissions readers do not look at your GPA in a vacuum. The 8-semester cap exists simply to level the playing field across schools with different scheduling limits. Admissions officers evaluate your entire academic record, heavily prioritizing course rigor, performance trends, and the overall context of what was available at your high school.
